T

he MIG Jacket is a very warm winter jacket and you can notice that the first time you try it on. The jacket is made using Carinthia’s own G-LOFT ISO+ synthetic fiber insulation material (www.g-loft.at) that guarantees good performance even in wet conditions. This is a good feature in military applications even though the jacket also has waterproof Gore-Tex membrane and YKK® water-repellent zippers to keep you dry.

There are also little details that keep you cozy and warm like the thermo fleece linings in the collar and front pockets. The zippered front pocket openings are positioned pretty high which ensures with the jackets good fitting cut that the pockets won’t become bulky and saggy even when filled with stuff. Front pockets are also very roomy and you can easily fit a 1,5 litre bottle. In addition there are also pockets in the upper arms, left forearm and inside on the left front. According to Carinthia’s website there should be two inner mesh zip-pockets but I have only found one. The upper arm pockets have Velcro panels for attaching your favorite patches. Inside, all three arm pockets have one shock cord loop for securing items and the left upper arm pocket also has elastic for keeping pens and other small stuff in order.

The hood(also lined with G-LOFT) has two adjustable shock cords that allow you to shape it to your liking. There is also adjustable shock cord at the hem. For active work, the underarms are equipped with long zippered vents. Although the vents don’t go all the way up to armpits, they work just like they should. One nice thing that comes with the jacket is the compression bag. It makes it easy to stow away the jacket when it isn’t needed. The packed size of the jacket is about 14x25 cm (about 5,5x10”).

In use

The jacket is right in its element at -15°C as it is advertised. You can stay warm with very light movement and opening the underarm vents keeps you from overheating when pushing up a steep hill. When buying the jacket I was worried that size small would be too small for me (177 cm / 92 cm chest), because according to size chart small is for 164-174 cm, but I’m happy I went with the smaller size. The jacket could be an inch or so longer at the hem, but it’s working fine because the hem is made longer at the backside. Carinthia’s olive color is kind of dark ranger green which works nicely in woodland environment. One thing missing that could be useful in deep snow is the powder skirt at the hem.

Conclusion

Highly recommended for use in -5 to -20°C. Made in EU using quality fabrics and packed with features. The jacket comes in four colors (Black, Olive, Coyote, Multicam)so you can choose one for discrete everyday use or go for more military look. I can’t think of anything bad to say about the jacket except the loss of powder skirt which might not be such a big problem. All in all an excellent jacket.
